Keyport Ministerium Food Pntry

10 E Front St
Keyport, NJ 07735
(732) 888-1986

Description
Mission The Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry, Inc. serves Seniors, Women, Infants, Children, Veterans, Singles, unemployed/under-employed, Disabled and an ever increasing Spanish population. They have seen a significant growth in their clientele. In 1983 the pantry served 24 families and today they serve on average 100 families a month and this number continues to grow due to their country?s economics and several other factors. (i.e. rise in health care). Thru hard work and frugal management, the Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry has survived and grown. Their objective is to tailor a program that will feed and educate their clientele in proper diet, nutrition and how to best utilize the food supply that they distribute monthly. They are currently working with the county, town and numerous donors to move to larger quarters to satisfy the needs of a constantly enlarging population. The new facility, anticipated hiring of staff personnel and providing evening and Saturday hours will allow us to accommodate the needs of their current and future clientele. To cope with their ever changing clientele they must utilize outside sources and develop innovative plans to continue their efforts and to prepare for the future. They envision the proposed program(s) being sustained via grants, donations, fundraisers and other contributions. Today, the Churches of the Ministerium, the surrounding towns in the bayshore area, businesses, civic organizations, their neighbors and friends are donating their time, money and efforts to help us realize their goal.

Programs ? Pantry service ? Distribute food received from the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties as well as donated food. The pantry serves on an average 100 families per month in the greater northern Bayshore area which includes the communities of: Aberdeen, Cliffwood, Cliffwood Beach, Hazlet, Holmdel, Keyport, Marlboro, Matawan, Middletown, No. Middletown, Pt. Monmouth and Union Beach. Additional areas serviced with referrals from authorized agencies. ? Client referrals to state and/or private agencies for specific assistance. ? Prescreening of clients as well as non-clients for Food Stamps. ? Provide additional amenities via donations though limited (due to lack of space) of clothing, school supplies, toys, household items and children necessities such as high chairs, strollers, etc.

Food Bank of South Jersey

Description
To help eliminate hunger and malnutrition in the ftheir counties they serve in southern New Jersey?Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem.

CURRENT PROGRAMS Direct Delivery program ensures that donated food reaches hungry families and individuals living in rural areas of southern New Jersey. They provide weekly deliveries to 46 charitable feeding organizations with food they would not otherwise be able to distribute to their clients. Kids Cafe program provides at-risk children with a safe place to receive hot meals, nutrition education and enriching academic and recreational activities. In partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Gloucester County, it has expanded to three sites and benefits 160 children. Food Acquisition Project ensures that the FBSJ has greater access to the millions of pounds of surplus food that is thrown away each year. Because so much of the wasted food in their country is made up of fresh, healthy items like fresh fruits and vegetables, this initiative also helps improve the quality of food they distribute. Healthy, perishable items are especially critical for sustaining programs that feed vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly. Fruit Basket project ensures that every after school or summer camp program has a consistent supply of fresh fruits so that children will have a healthy alternative for snack food. Along with the supply of fruit they will offer age appropriate mini nutrition classes to help children learn the benefits of healthy eating. FUTURE PROGRAMS Agency Capacity Expansion program is designed to strengthen the fragile network of charitable feeding programs to distribute more food safely and efficiently in under served communities. Utilizing internal resources and industry experts they provide training in food safety, inventory control, volunteer management, and fundraising and food acquisition methods. Operation Frontline is a national program administered locally is a nutrition education program that fights childhood hunger by teaching families how to make healthy and budget-wise food choices. With six different courses that target adults, teens and children, Operation Frontline takes a cooking-centered approach to nutrition education. Chefs and nutritionists volunteer to teach classes that feature hands-on meal preparation, basic nutrition, food safety, menu planning, food budgeting and healthy snacking. They are scheduled to launch this program in Fall 2007.

America’s Grow-A-Row

Contact
150 Pittstown Rd
Pittstown, NJ 08867
(908) 331-2962

Description
Their mission is to help those in need through a volunteer effort of planting, picking, and delivering fresh produce via a unique model that: heightens awareness of socio-economic issues, highlights the importance of local farms, and inspires volunteers across many generations and skill sets.

A few years after Chip started the garden program, he was offered access to additional acreage. Most of this new available land was at PVO, where broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower were planted – both spring and fall planting in some years. Other land was offered by friends in the area. One offered an acre behind their house to grow potatoes, which became yet another Bethlehem Presbyterian Church mission project. Other friends freed up an acre at their home specifically for corn, and a local buffalo farm offered a small piece to grow melons.   In addition to the garden programs, this additional acreage dedicated for planting totaled 7 acres in 2009. Of that acreage, just shy of 40,000 pounds of food was produced and donated to feeding agencies all over the state of New Jersey. That’s about 120,000 servings of delicious healthy produce, right off the farm.   These planting programs are so successful thanks mostly to the generosity of landowners and farmers who love seeing a portion of their property at work for the greater good. Secondly, the programs are successful due to the generosity of time of their nearly 1,000 dedicated volunteers who are happy to help plant and harvest the produce that comes off this land.
