St. Landry Parish Health Units operates four Health Units which provide the following services:
Child Health and WIC Services: provides regular nursing exams for well babies including measurements and systems review If income and nutritionally eligible, WIC vouchers are provided as a supplement to purchase some foods Nutrition education and counseling is done plus food demonstrations covering preparation and nutrients in foods Follow-up and some home visiting services are available KidMed services are also provided and funded through the child's medicaid card Some services are by appointment only and patients are seen on Monday all day and Thursdays morning only in Opelousas; on Tuesdays in Melville; Monday-Friday in Sunset; and on Thursdays in Eunice There is no charge for these services.
Full KidMed services are provided in Child Health Clinics.
Maternity Services: both medical and nursing services are available for the pregnant woman This includes pap smears, STD services and testing Frequent monitoring of fetal heart tones and uterine growth Referrals for problems are made to LSUMC. WIC is provided with proper eligibility Services are by appointment only and available only in Opelousas on Tuesdays and in Melville on Tuesdays There is no charge for services.
STD Clinic: testing for sexually transmitted diseases and treatment. Counseling on prevention of STD and safe sex is given. Medical doctors visits are available on Wednesday am weekly in Opelousas Treatment is available by trained nurse clinicians according to standing orders on a walk in basis daily in Opelousas and on Monday afternoon in Eunice There is a $5.00 administrative fee for services but no one will be turned away if they cannot pay.
Walk-in Immunizations: for both children and adults Flu and pneumonia vaccine in season $5.00 administrative fee but waived if unable to pay Overseas immunizations available at Lafayette Health Unit Blood pressure checks with MD order - no charge.
Children's Special Health Services: admission to service in parish of residence but clinic visits to MD are at the Lafayette Health Unit Follow-ups are done in parish of residence There is no charge Must fit income requirements for program PKU's done on a infant as required by state law Follow-up thru state's Genetics Program is done.
TB Program: follow-up in parish of residence - regional chest clinic is at Lafayette Health Unit Diagnosed TB cases are given daily medication observed by Public Health staff MD available at Lafayette Health Unit for diagnosis and treatment but patient must contact parish of residence Health Unit first for referral. Contacts of cases are tested and medicated if necessary Some visiting is done when necessary Medication can be provided for pulmonary cases of TB from private MD's with orders and copies of records.

WEATHERIZATION: weatherizes the homes of low-income residents to reduce the high costs of cooling and heating purposes. Low-income elderly homeowners get first priority. Activities include weather-stripping, caulking, replacing rotten weatherboards, roof-repairing, ceiling insulation, replacement of worn doors.
TRANSPORTATION: portal-to-portal; public non-emergency medical and human services agencies access transportation is provided to low-income elderly and general public of the parish, Monday thru Friday. Transportation sites include doctors, dentists, mental health, education (Project Independence), University Medical Center (Lafayette, LA) dialysis center, grocery shopping (occasional) and vocational Rehabilitation service/training resources
SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM: senior companions...involved in valuable service through the Senior Corps...are part of the Corporation for National Services' efforts to engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in community-based service. Senior Companions provide person-to-person non-medical support to help another stay independent. Join their ranks if you are age 60 or over, meet income requirements and are willing to serve 20 hours per week. Senior Companions will receive a tax-free stipend, pre-service orientation and monthly training. You will also receive reimbursement assistance for transportation and meals while on duty, an annual physical exam, accident and liability insurance during your service.
TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION PROGRAM: provides comprehensive awareness and education to teenagers (ages 8-19) and their parents/families on problems associated with teen pregnancies.
PRESCRIPTION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Applications are completed to assist customers with prescriptions through pharmaceutical companies.
MEDICAID OF LOUISIANA CERTIFIED ENROLLMENT CENTER: applications for Medicaid taken for women, children, senior citizens and disabled. Call the office (337) 948-3651 to schedule an interview.
HUD COUNSELING: provides housing counseling services to families with homes financed by HUD Guaranteed loans in areas of default mortgage, Pre and Post home purchasing, home maintenance and budget.
FEMA: assistance with past due (gas, light, water or rent/mortgage). Payments made to vendors on behalf of eligible participants.
EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE: nutritious food items are provided to the disadvantaged of the parish in emergency cases.
NEEDY FAMILY FOOD DISTRIBUTION: provides nutritious food in the form of surplus commodities to needy families throughout St. Landry Parish on a first-come-first served basis.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL PROGRAM: provide assistance with prescriptions and doctors visits.
LEGAL SERVICE COUNSELING/REFERRAL SERVICES: civil counseling referral to applicants (i.e. human services, general welfare benefits, job counseling and referrals)
JOB CORPS: referral, follow-up counseling services.
INFORMATION and REFERRAL: referral and coordination with other Human Services Agencies within the parish. Follow-up and home visit services are also provided.

HOMEMAKER SERVICES: assistance with light housekeeping, errands, light meal preparation for age 60 or older (small donation is requested for this service);
FOOD FOR SENIORS: food distribution once a month of various can goods, juices, etc. for age 60 or older; groceries are to be picked up at sites in the town nearest client's home;
COMMODITIES: given every 3 months to those who qualify; offered to 60 years or older and also those who qualify (based on income); TRANSPORTATION: transportation to doctor, shopping and other services for age 60 or older (a donation is usually collected for this service);
SENIOR ACTIVITIES: bingo, pool, ceramics, movie and popcorn offered to age 60 or older; TELEPHONING: once a month for shut-ins age 60 or older, calls are made to the home for a friendly check to see if they are doing all right;
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE: in the form of applications for medical assistance (no age limit).
ADDITIONAL SERVICES: elderly housing in the Church Point area, respite care for Medicaid waiver participants, ombudsman program for nursing home residents, blood pressure monitoring throughout the parish. The Council on Aging is also an enrollment center for Medicaid, with an appointment.
