OVERVIEW: Acts as the point of entry for Howard County Coordinated System of Homeless Services (CSHS). Provides free 24-hour telephone and walk-in crisis counseling, emergency shelter, transitional housing, and community education in the Central Maryland area. Also offers a mobile crisis team for psychiatric emergencies. - - SERVICES: - 1) 24-HOUR CRISIS INTERVENTION AND REFERRAL: Offers a hotline and walk-in counseling center for those in need of immediate assistance with a personal, situational, or mental health crisis. Services are free of charge and confidential. Certified suicide prevention center. - - 2) COORDINATED SYSTEM of HOMELESS SERVICES (CSHS): Provides a point of entry for Howard County residents who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. All calls related to homelessness should be directed to Grassroots. This may include eviction prevention, rent assistance, transitional housing, and emergency housing. - - -Family and Women's Shelter: Provides 33-bed shelter for individuals or families. Provides meals, case management, individual and group counseling, supportive services and transportation. Length of stay determined on an individual case basis, maximum stay is 6 months. Program focuses on individualized plans intended to help residents achieve a permanent resolution to their housing crisis. In a transfer the I&R Specialist must have the name and phone number of the caller. Individuals must reside in Howard County for at least 6 months to be eigible for assistance. - - -Men's Shelter: Offers the same services as the emergency shelter, with 18 beds available for men in need. Length of stay determined on an individual case basis, maximum stay is 6 months. Program focuses on individualized plans intended to help residents achieve a permanent resolution to their housing crisis. Individuals must reside in Howard County for at least 6 months to be eligible for assistance. - - -Cold Weather Shelter: Operates during the winter months (usually Nov-Mar). Offers overnight shelters, food and case management services. Residents must leave during daytime hours. Shelter revolves around several, faith based communities in the Columbia, MD area. Individuals must reside in Howard County for at least 6 months to be eligible for assistance. - - 3) MOBILE CRISIS TEAM: Responds with the police to psychiatric emergencies, traumatic death situations, and intense family conflict daily 9AM-11PM. Can only be utilized once per month..2) FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Provides financial assistance to persons with court-ordered evictions or utility cut-offs (MEAP eligible) when funds are available. Limited to once per year. Must go to Police Department after 4PM to apply for a voucher- NO GUARANTEE.4) COUNSELING: Provides Biblically-based counseling and budget counseling to youths and their families.5) YOUTH GROUP: During the school year, on Tues from 6-7:30PM, young people, ages 6 through 17, visit the Corps for a meeting, prayer, dinner, and arts and crafts. Transportation is provided.6) SUMMER CAMP: Provides a one-week camp program in Hedgesville, West Virginia at Camp Tomahawk, in July to approximately 20 youths, ages 6-12, from low income families. Youths are selected on a first come, first served basis. Applicants are encouraged to start calling as early as April. Transportation is provided to the camp.7) VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Provides Bible instruction, crafts and age-related activities for one week during the summer months at the Corps (ages 6-13). Transportation is provided free of charge. 8) HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE 2012: CLOSEDWALK IN TO SIGN-UP SEPT 15-26.o CHRISTMAS: Offers gift cards and toys to anyone in need. Bring in threegift suggestions$30 or less for children 0-12. o THANKSGIVING: Must come in to sign up. Call before to check availability. MUST have ALL of the following required documentation:--Valid Maryland ID card --SS cards for all household members --Proof of all income sources (pay stubs/DSS/child support, food stamp letter)--Proof of expenses (current electric, gas, oil, water bills; car payment and insurance, etc)--Proof of residence (Section 8, public housing or HUD)--Must provide the paper including the break-down of family members, monthly rent and birth certificates for all children, ages 12 years and under --Must know the clothing & shoe sizes, and 3 specific gift suggestions for all children. 9) DONATIONS : Accepts new clothing, toiletries, gloves, coats, toys and food.
